Obama Wins, Internet Communities Go Wild
By Jessica Kostek, TMCnet Channel Editor
Have you heard? More importantly, how did you get last night’s news? To say that the Internet blew-up after news stations announced Obama would be the next president could be the understatement of the century. YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace (News - Alert) all of them were buzzing with people either celebrating or consoling each other.
America gathered in bars, squares or public rallies. Around television sets or perhaps radios but the majority went online to get the most up-to-date information any elections has ever seen. Students at Navarro College posted a video of themselves screaming, jumping up and down and then screaming louder for Obama. Another supporter uploaded on YouTube (News - Alert) his three cheers to Obama and gulped down a 2-liter bottle of soda.
Others retaliated, according to Derrik J. Lang from the Associated Press, “One wig-clad man posted a YouTube video reminiscent of Chris Crocker's infamous Britney Spears rant, instead shouting "Leave McCain alone!" in front of a sheet.” Another man played a song on the piano saying, "You all wanted change/And that's what you're gonna get/But the change that you will see/You will most likely regret."
Virtual worlds such as Second Life held parties as well. Obama supporters inside the virtual world clapped, danced and cheered. One avatar named Jordanna Beaumont proclaimed, “The long nightmare is OVER!"
iReport type messages were sent through Twitter.com. People posted tweets on Twitter’s Election site from rallies, election parties and their living rooms using their cell phones and the Web.
"There were news people from all over the world at the Biltmore tonight," posted luv2shoppe in Phoenix, McCain was watching the returns. "It was quite an experience, even if the results were disappointing."
"Four blocks from Grant Park in Chicago," posted jordanlevy. "It's crazy down here."
Obama himself even turned to the World Wide Web just before he gave his speech in Chicago. “"I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first. We just made history. And I don't want you to forget how we did it. You made history every single day during this campaign — every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends and neighbors about why you believe it's time for change," he posted on his website.
Bloggers also got in on the action. Sara K. Smith, a liberal posted on Wonkette.com, "raise a glass to your Republican friends because it was not so long ago that you (liberals) were precisely in their position, and remember how much it sucked."
Carol Platt Liebau, a conservative writer for Townhall.com posted: "We are Americans first, and therefore I wish the Obamas health and happiness. It's even possible to wish them success — so long as it is in keeping with the best traditions of American liberty, virtue and prosperity."
